Q1 How does Keats' poem, A Thing of 

Beauty appeal richly to the senses, stimulating the reader's inner sight as well as the sense of touch and smell? Write your answer in about 120-150 words.


Ans Sensuousness is a quality in poetry which affects the senses i.e. hearing, seeing, touching, smelling and tasting. Sensuous poetry does not present ideas and philosophical thoughts. It gives delight to senses, appeals to our eyes by presenting beautiful and coulourful word pictures to our ears by its metrical music and musical sounds, to our nose by arousing the sense of smell and so on.


Keats is the worshiper of beauty and peruses beauty everywhere; and it is his senses that first reveal to him the beauty of things. He writes poetry only out of what he feels upon his senses Keats establishes this with powerful imagery and word play.The cooling comfort of the bower, dancing daffodils ,
 the babbling stream and the mid-forest brake with the musk rose blooms evoke our imagination, sense of hearing, touch and smell. The stories of mighty and the doom that befalls them appeals to our intellect The endless fountain may be an allusion of the fountain of youth however it has a sublimating effect on the reader. So A thing of beauty appeals to the sense of the readers.

Ans. Keats uses the images of nature to describe the beautiful bounty of the earth. He specifically refers to bower, flowery band, the sun, the moon, trees old and young, shady boon, daffodils, green world, clear rills, cooling covert, mid forest brake, fair musk rose, images of sense and smell. The poet also illustrates a connection with nature - "flowery band to bind us to the earth".

Ans. According to Keats, man has strong relationship with nature. Man is bound to the earth despite the gloom and misery on earth. Beauty relieves man of gloom and misery. The beauty that man sees around him,brings him jov and respite; it is a joy forever because of the bond he forges with nature. Keats is a believer in the healing powers nature. He talks about the different elements of nature that surround man and overwhelm  him in their  magnificence

Ans. Keats lists the things that cause suffering and pain to human soul. It includes jealousy, disappointment, lack of human qualities of head and heart like compassion, love, generosity, etc ., gloomy days, and our unhealthy and miserable ways in which humanity searches for meaning in life.

 Ans. In spite of misery and gloom, one is inspired to stay connected to the earth and live happily owing to the delic and fragile moments of beauty. Keats praises nature and believes that man's connection with nature is essential contributing to his happiness.
